We needed something to help our son make YouTube videos. We don't have a gaming computer. We have an everyday laptop, mostly used for surfing the internet and checking emails.
So we didn't want to pay an extreme amount of money on a gaming laptop. We read the reviews and watched the videos for the Elgato and compared it to the other options.
This one just seemed like the best option. If you have an everyday laptop like us, it is most definitely possible to run this device and actually have it work. There is a lot to learn though. My suggestion is that you go on YouTube and watch the how to videos.
We also purchased a Yeti microphone for the audio. It's a great microphone, but you have to remember to switch to the device when using the Elgato and that's if you use the commentary option. We found that with our laptop limitations, downloading a program that records audio works better.
You record audio using that separate program and when you piece your videos together, use the audio from it and not from the Elgato. Also, if you use the microphone on the laptop, it will sound muffled.
I highly suggest getting a headset or a microphone when using it. The sound will be so much better. We also found that pausing the live feed on the laptop makes for a less choppy video. There are lots of great tips like these online. It's a great device though.
The editing tool on it is okay. I wouldn't edit using it. There are so many better programs out there to make the video you want to make. It really limits you, but it is a nice place to watch what you've made. We have to stretch it across the room when we make our videos, so the nice long cord really helps us out a lot.
So don't be discouraged if you have an everyday laptop. It will work. Just know that you have to make some adjustments. When you take the time to learn what's working and what's not, your end result is a really nice looking AND nice sounding video.

First the initial setup: The HD60 is pretty simple to setup upon arrival. After this you plug the USB cable into the Elgato and then into your computer. Thats all the hardware setup, from here you just need to setup the software side of things which Is relatively simple. All you need to do is go to Elgato's website and download the 'Game Capture HD' software that will allow you to get the signal up on your computer.
You can go to input sources and the Elgato should show up there. Pros: The Elgato captures great quality video without any issue. Its very easy to setup. Cons: Can be pricey, there are other options out there, however in my opinion the Elgato is still the best screen capture device. If your using PS4, you must disable HDCP when you use the Elgato, this means some programs won't be allowed to run, I believe that includes ones like Netflix, so if you use your PS4 as a media centre also, you may need to keep changing settings and changing what cables are plugged in as with HDCP enabled you may not get any signal through to your TV.

Amateur to pro. However I have two reason for thinking this: 1 First and foremost the captures of 4K material is very "soft" compared to other cards. At first I thought this was just me but now I'm more sure. The Avermedia GC captures a much sharper 4K signal with seeming higher res.
However eyes can be deceiving Its specs in OBS studio report 4K but the default res seems to be p and this seems to be the "information" that the card is able to capture. That also could contribute to perceived visual softness in Elgato captures. So beware of that. I am not sure Elgato is straight shooting with this product?
So I game in p with a hz monitor. The issue I was having with the HD60pro was that when duplicating the monitor output to send to the capture card, it defaults to p at 60hz. By default it matches the resolution of the lowest input device. This device solves that issue. With the 4k60pro mk2, I can stream to to the capture device at p and a high refresh rate.
This gives me a clean stream output for my twitch broadcasts. If you game at a high refresh rate and stream, this is the only way to go. I bought this device because I wanted to display my Nintendo Switch on my iMac I haven't used it to stream per se, but I have connected it to my Nintendo dock so that the iMac screen acts as the display.
